Salicylic Acid/Sulfur Shampoo

Salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used to treat seborrhea.

Salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo is available under the following different brand names: MG217 Medicated Tar-Free Shampoo and Sebex.

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Seborrhea

• Shampoo: Apply to wet hair/scalp, lather, then rinse well; use daily or every other day; 1-2 treatments per week may maintain control
• Cleanser: Use daily or every other day

Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients

Side effects of salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo include:

• Stinging/burning of scalp
• Skin peeling

High concentrations (greater than 10%) may cause muscle cramps, dizziness, vomiting, headache

Warnings

• This medication contains salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo. Do not take MG217 Medicated Tar-Free Shampoo or Sebex if you are allergic to salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Cautions

• Children under 2 years more sensitive to sulfur than adults

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.
• It is unknown if salicylic acid/sulfur shampoo is excreted in breast milk.
