Sodium Chloride Hypertonic, Ophthalmic

Sodium chloride hypertonic, ophthalmic is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used for temporary relief of corneal edema.

Sodium chloride hypertonic, ophthalmic is available under the following different brand names: Muro 128 2%, Muro 128 5%, and Muro 128 5% Ointment.

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Temporary Relief of Corneal Edema

• Ophthalmic solution: Instill 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 3-4 hours or as directed by a physician
• Ophthalmic ointment: Pull down the lower lid of the affected eye(s); apply a small amount (1/4 inch) of ointment to the inside of the eyelid; apply once daily or as directed by a physician

Administration

• Ophthalmic ointment recommended for nighttime use; preservative-free formulation
• The ophthalmic solution recommended for daytime use
• Avoid contamination do not touch the tip of container to any surface; replace cap after use

Warnings

• This medication contains sodium chloride hypertonic, ophthalmic. Do not take Muro 128 2%, Muro 128 5%, or Muro 128 5% Ointment if you are allergic to sodium chloride hypertonic, ophthalmic, or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Cautions

• Do not use if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy
• If the condition worsens or persists for more than 72 hours or if you experience eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness, or irritation of the eye consult a physician
