Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate

Sodium tetradecyl sulfate is used to treat venous varices.

Sodium tetradecyl sulfate is available under the following different brand names: Sotradecol and Trombovar.

Dosage Forms and Strengths

Injectable Solution

• 1%
• 3%

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Venous Varices

• May administer a test dose of 0.5 mL several hours before treating with larger doses
• 0.5-2 mL intravenously (IV) (preferably 1 mL) in each vein; 1% solution for general use and 3% solution for larger varicosities
• 10 mL solution per treatment session maximum

Administration

• Place injection sites 2.4-4.7 in [6-12 cm] apart
• Do not use if the solution has particulate matter or discoloration
• SC varicose veins: use only 1% solution, most effective when administered as a froth prepared by vigorously shaking the syringe

Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients.

Side effects of Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate may include:

• Reversible hyperpigmentation of injection site
• Injection site ulcer, necrosis following extravasation
• Immune hypersensitivity reaction
• Anaphylaxis (death reported)

Warnings

• This medication contains sodium tetradecyl sulfate. Do not take Sotradecol or Trombovar if you are allergic to sodium tetradecyl sulfate or any ingredients contained in this drug.
• Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity
• Pregnancy
• Incompetency of collateral deep veins in the legs
• Incompetency of the valves of the greater and lesser saphenous veins before ligation
• Thrombophlebitis
• Tuberculosis and hyperthyroidism
• Acute infections, prolonged recumbency
• Cardiac insufficiency, diabetes, arterial disease
• Varicosities caused by pelvic neoplasia

Cautions

• The first injection of 0.5 mL of 1% solution followed by a few hours' observation for any signs of allergic reactions is recommended before the second injection
• Use caution in thromboangiitis obliterans and patients with peripheral arteriosclerosis
• An extreme anaphylactic reaction may be treated with 0.25 mL of 1:1000 epinephrine IV and side effects controlled by antihistamines
• Extravasation may cause severe necrosis
• Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism were reported with the use
• Evaluate valvular and venous competency before use
• The intra-arterial injection may result in amputation of the limb

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use sodium tetradecyl sulfate with caution during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.
• It is unknown if sodium tetradecyl sulfate passes into breast milk. Use caution while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor.
