Tetanus Immune Globulin

Tetanus Immune Globulin is a prescription medication used for the prevention and treatment of tetanus.

• Tetanus Immune Globulin is available under the following different brand names: Hyper Tet, HyperTET S/D, TIG

Adult and pediatric dosage

Powder for injection

• 250 units

Tetanus

Adult dosage

• Prophylaxis: 250 Units IM (single dose)

Active tetanus: 3000-6000 Units IM

Pediatric dosage

Prophylaxis

• Less than 7 years old: 4 Units/kg or 250 Units IM  
• Above 7 years old: 250 Units IM (single dose)

Treatment

• 3000-6000 Units IM

Common side effects of Tetanus Immune Globulin include:

• mild fever,
• joint pain,
• muscle aches,
• nausea,
• tiredness, and
• pain, itching, swelling, or redness at the injection site.

Serious side effects of Tetanus Immune Globulin include:

• tingling of the hands or feet,
• hearing problems,
• trouble swallowing,
• muscle weakness, and
• seizures.

Rare side effects of Tetanus Immune Globulin include:

• none

• Tetanus Immune Globulin has serious interactions with the following drugs:
  • axicabtagene ciloleucel
  • brexucabtagene autoleucel
  • ciltacabtagene autoleucel
  • idecabtagene vicleucel
  • lisocabtagene maraleucel
  • tisagenlecleucel
• Tetanus Immune Globulin has moderate interactions with the following drugs:
  • adenovirus types 4 and 7 live, oral
  • BCG vaccine live
  • efgartigimod alfa
  • measles (rubeola) vaccine
  • measles mumps and rubella vaccine, live
  • measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine, live
  • rubella vaccine
  • smallpox (vaccinia) vaccine, live
  • varicella virus vaccine live
• Tetanus Immune Globulin has minor interactions with the following drug:
  • protein a column

• Hypersensitivity to gamma globulin, IgA, thimerosal

Cautions

• Thrombocytopenia or coagulation disorders may contraindicate IM injection
• Made from human plasma, a small risk of viral transmission through administration

Pregnancy and Lactation

• Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks during pregnancy
• Lactation
