What Is Tioconazole and How Does It Work?

Tioconazole is an over the counter (OTC) medication used to treat vaginal candida (yeast) infections.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Tioconazole?

Common side effects of Tioconazole include:

  • headache
  • vaginal/urethral
  • burning/itching/pain
  • increased urination

Serious side effects of Tioconazole include:

  • rash
  • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • severe dizziness
  • trouble breathing

Rare side effects of Tioconazole include:

  • none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

What Are the Dosages of Tioconazole?

Adult dosage

Vaginal ointment

  • 6.5%

Vaginal candidiasis

Adult dosage

  • Insert 1 applicatorful (5 g of 6.5% ointment) intravaginally once a day at bedtime
