What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide?
Common side effects of Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide include:
- Stomach pain,
- Nausea,
- Diarrhea,
- Constipation,
- Dizziness,
- Headache,
- Blurred vision, and
- Dry mouth
Serious side effects of Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide include:
- Blurred vision,
- Tunnel vision,
- Eye pain,
- Seeing halos around lights,
- Lightheadedness,
- Fast, slow, or uneven heart rate,
- Dark urine,
- Clay-colored stool,
- Yellowing of eyes or skin (jaundice),
- Severe pain in the upper stomach or back,
- Nausea,
- Vomiting,
- Fever,
- Sore throat,
- Headache,
- Skin rash that may blister and peel,
- Numbness or tingling,
- Muscle weakness,
- Loss of movement in any body part,
- Leg cramps,
- Fluttering in the chest,
- Increased thirst and urination,
- Feeling restless,
- Little or no urination,
- Painful or difficult urination,
- Swelling in the feet or ankles,
- Tiredness,
- Short of breath,
- Joint pain or swelling,
- Swollen glands,
- Muscle aches,
- Chest pain,
- Unusual thoughts or behavior, and
- Patchy skin color
Rare side effects of Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide include:

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:
- Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
- Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
- Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

- 37.5 mg/25 mg

Tablet
- 37.5 mg/25 mg
- 75 mg/50 mg
Adult dosage
- 1-2 tablets/capsules (37.5-50 mg triamterene and 25 mg HCTZ) orally once a day
- 1 tablet (75 mg triamterene and 50 mg HCTZ) orally once a day
Edema
Adult dosage
- 1-2 tablets/capsules (37.5-50 mg triamterene and 25 mg HCTZ) orally once a day
- 1 tablet (75 mg triamterene and 50 mg HCTZ) orally once a day

What Are Warnings and Precautions for Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide?
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to triamterene, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfonamides (hydrochlorothiazide is a sulfonamide)
- Concomitant administration with potassium-rich diets, or any other form of potassium supplementation
- Chronic or significant renal insufficiency or significant renal impairment
- Anuria
- Hyperkalemia above 5.5 mEq/L

Cautions
- Acute transient myopia and acute angle-closure glaucoma have been reported, particularly with a history of sulfonamide or penicillin allergy
- Hydrochlorothiazide can cause electrolyte disturbances including hypokalemia, hypochloremic alkalosis, and hyponatremia
- Photosensitization may occur; instruct patients to protect their skin from the sun and undergo regular skin cancer screening
- Use with caution in diabetes mellitus, hepatic impairment, gout, hypercalcemia, hypercholesterolemia, kidney stones, parathyroid disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and renal impairment
- Risk of cross-reaction in patients with allergy to sulfonylurea, sulfonamides, thiazides, loop diuretics, or carbonic anhydrase may occur
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy.
- Lactation
- Not recommended; discontinue the drug or do not nurse
