What Is Tropicamide and How Does It Work?
Tropicamide is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of Refraction (Mydriasis) and Funduscopic Exam (Cyclopegia).
- Tropicamide is available under the following different brand names: Mydriacyl, Tropicacyl.
What Are Dosages of Tropicamide?
Adult and pediatric dosage
Ophthalmic solution
- 0.5%
- 1%
Refraction (Mydriasis)
Adult and pediatric dosage
- 1-2 drops of 1% solution in the eye(s), repeat in 5 min, perform exam within 30 minutes of the second instillation
Funduscopic Exam (Cycloplegia)
Adult and pediatric dosage
- 1-2 drops of 0.5% solution in eyes 15-20 min before the exam, may repeat every 30 minutes when necessary.

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Tropicamide?
Common side effects of Tropicamide include:
- blurred vision,
- mild stinging or the eyes,
- increased sensitivity to light,
- dry mouth, and
- headache
Serious side effects of Tropicamide include:
- hives,
- difficulty breathing,
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
- unusual changes in mood or behavior,
- fast, slow, or uneven heart rate,
- shortness of breath, and
- light-headedness
Rare side effects of Tropicamide include:
- none

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Known or suspected angle-closure glaucoma, presence of a shallow anterior chamber unless gonioscopic observation of the chamber angle is possible

Cautions
- Hypertension, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, cardiac disorders
- Remove contact lenses before instilling drops
- The possibility of undiagnosed glaucoma should be considered
- Risk of potentially dangerous Central nervous system disturbances in Peds
- May cause increased Intraocular pressure
- 0.5% solution incapable of producing satisfactory cycloplegia

- Use with caution if the benefits outweigh the risks during pregnancy
Lactation
- Not known if distributed in milk
