What Are Dosages of Trospium Chloride?

Adult dosage

Tablet

  • 20 mg

Capsule, extended-release

  • 60 mg

Overactive Bladder

Adult and geriatric dosage

  • Immediate release: 20 mg orally twice daily
  • Extended-Release: 60 mg orally every day

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Trospium Chloride?

Common side effects of Trospium Chloride include:

  • dry mouth or throat,
  • headache,
  • mild constipation,
  • upset stomach,
  • gas,
  • dizziness,
  • drowsiness, and
  • dry eyes.

Serious side effects of Trospium Chloride include:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • severe stomach pain or bloating,
  • severe constipation,
  • urinating less than usual or not at all,
  • confusion, and
  • hallucinations

Rare side effects of Trospium Chloride include:

  • none

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheartedness, or passing out.

  • Trospium Chloride has severe interactions with no other drugs.
  • Trospium Chloride has serious interactions with the following drugs:
    • glycopyrronium tosylate topical
    • pramlintide
    • revefenacin
    • secretin
  • Trospium Chloride has moderate interactions with at least 101 other drugs.
  • Trospium Chloride has minor interactions with the following drugs:
    • dimenhydrinate
    • donepezil
    • galantamine
    • levodopa

Contraindications

  • Urinary/gastric retention
  • Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Hypersensitivity

Cautions

  • Use caution in renal impairment, geriatric patients, moderate or severe hepatic dysfunction
  • Angioedema of the face, lips, tongue, and/or larynx reported (including with 1st dose); if the involvement of the tongue, hypopharynx, or larynx occurs promptly discontinue; promptly provide appropriate therapy and/or measures necessary to ensure a patent airway function
  • Administer with caution to patients with clinically significant bladder outflow obstruction or gastrointestinal obstructive disorders due to risk of urinary or gastric retention; use with caution in patients with conditions such as ulcerative colitis, intestinal atony, and myasthenia gravis
  • To administer, must carefully monitor patients with controlled narrow-angle glaucoma; benefits should outweigh risks
  • Somnolence reported; advise patients not to drive or operate heavy machinery until they know how therapy affects them
  • Drug substantially excreted by the kidney; effects of moderate renal impairment on systemic exposure are not known but systemic exposure is likely increased; risk of anticholinergic adverse reactions (including dry mouth, constipation, dyspepsia, urinary tract infection, and urinary retention) is expected to be greater in patients with moderate renal impairment

  • Use with caution if benefits outweigh risks during pregnancy
