WHAT IS INDUCTION?
Induction refers to various treatments used for inducing labor. The goal of induction is to start contractions or make them stronger.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MEDICATIONS?
Two types of drugs are commonly used to induce labor, which includes:
- Prostaglandins: They stimulate uterine contractions that can be used to induce labor. Misoprostol and dinoprostone are two common drugs used for inducing labor.
- Oxytocin: This drug stimulates uterine contraction and controls postpartum bleeding or hemorrhage.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?
Common side effects of prostaglandins include:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain, nausea, upset stomach, and gas
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting, heavy menstrual flow
- Menstrual cramps
Common side effects of oxytocin include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- More intense or more frequent contractions (this is an expected effect of oxytocin)
This is not a complete list of side effects and other serious side effects or health problems that may occur because of the use of this drug. Call your doctor for medical advice about serious side effects or adverse reactions. You may report side effects or health problems to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
IS IT SAFE TO TAKE INDUCTION MEDICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY?
These medications are indicated for initiating labor or speeding up labor during pregnancy. There are no known indications for the use of this medication in the first 3 months of pregnancy other than in relation to spontaneous or induced abortion.
It is unknown if these drugs are absorbed into breast milk. Hence, use these medications with caution. Always consult your physician before taking any medicine.
IS IT SAFE TO DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE TAKING INDUCTION MEDICATIONS?
Drinking alcohol with these medications can delay or slow the labor process. Alcohol when taken in the later stages will stop or inhibit labor from occurring. Pregnant women shouldn’t drink alcohol as it could lead to fetal malformation.
