Xylometazoline

Xylometazoline is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication used for treating nasal congestion.

• Xylometazoline is available under the following different brand names: Triaminic Decongestant Spray Nasal & Sinus Congestion

Adult and pediatric dosage

Nasal drops/spray

• 0.05%

Nasal Congestion

Adult dosage

• Aged below 12 years: Not recommended
• Aged above 12 years: 0.05% Spray (2-3 drops/sprays) per nostril every 8-10 hours; no more than 3 doses/day

Common side effects of the Xylometazoline include:

• temporary burning, 
• stinging, 
• dryness in the nose, 
• runny nose, and 
• sneezing.

Serious side effects of the Xylometazoline include:

• slow/fast/pounding heartbeat,
• dizziness,
• nausea,
• headache, 
• mental/mood changes,
• trouble sleeping, 
• shaking (tremors), 
• unusual sweating,
• unusual weakness
• rash,
• itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), 
• severe dizziness, 
• trouble breathing.

Rare side effects of the Xylometazoline include:

• none

• Xylometazoline has severe interactions with the following drugs:
  • isocarboxazid
  • linezolid
  • phenelzine
  • selegiline transdermal
  • tranylcypromine
• Xylometazoline has serious interactions with at least 25 other drugs.
• Xylometazoline has moderate interactions with at least 168 other drugs.
• Xylometazoline has minor interactions with the following drugs:
  • desmopressin
  • eucalyptus
  • sage
