Articaine Ophthalmic is an amide local anesthetic indicated for ocular surface anesthesia before ocular procedures and/or intraocular injections in adults and pediatric patients.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, coordination loss, unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.
  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights.
  • Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

  • Cautions
    • Topical ophthalmic use
      • Not for injections or intraocular administration
      • Corneal injury due to insensitivity
      • Patients should not touch their eyes for at least 10-20 minutes after administration, owing to accidental injuries due to ocular insensitivity
    • Corneal opacification
      • Prolonged use of topical ocular anesthetics may produce permanent corneal opacification and ulceration with accompanying visual loss
  • Risk of contamination
    • Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye, eyelids, or any other surface, as this may contaminate the solution
  • Administration by a clinician
    • Indicated for administration under the direct supervision of a healthcare provider
    • Not intended for patient self-administration

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women to inform a drug-associated risk

    • There are no data regarding the presence of articaine or its metabolites in human or animal milk, its effects on breastfed infants, or milk production
