What Is Deconex?

Deconex (guaifenesin, phenylephrine hydrochloride capsule) is a combination of an expectorant and a nasal decongestant indicated to temporarily relieve the following symptoms due to the common cold, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), or other upper respiratory allergies: helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to drain bronchial tubes and make coughs more productive, relieves nasal congestion, and reduces swelling of nasal passages. Deconex is available over-the-counter (OTC).

What Are Side Effects of Deconex?

Deconex may cause serious side effects including:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat,
  • severe anxiety, and
  • nervousness

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

Common side effects of Deconex include:

  • dizziness,
  • headache,
  • nausea,
  • trouble sleeping,
  • nervousness,
  • excitability, or
  • weakness.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for Deconex

The dose of Deconex for adults and children 12 years of age and over is 1 capsule every 4 hours, not to exceed 6 capsules in 24 hours.

Deconex may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

  • trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland

Stop use and ask a doctor if

  • nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness occur
  • cough or nasal congestion persists for more than 1 week, tends to recur, or is accompanied by a fever, rash, or persistent headache.
  • A persistent cough may be a sign of a serious condition.

If pregnant or breast feeding, ask a health professional before use.
Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control

  • if you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric, or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
