Flavoxate

Flavoxate is a prescription medication used for treating dysuria, increased urinary frequency/incontinence, nocturia, suprapubic pain, urinary incontinence, urinary tract irritation, urinary urgency caused by an overactive bladder.

• Flavoxate is available under the following different brand names:

Adult and pediatric dosage

Tablets

• 100mg

Overactive Bladder

Adult dosage

• 100-200 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours

Dysuria, Urinary Frequency

Pediatric dosage

• Children below 12 years: Not recommended; safety and efficacy not established
• Children above 12 years: 100-200 mg orally every 6 to 8 hours

Common side effects of Flavoxate include:

• nausea, 
• vomiting,
• blurred vision,
• dry mouth,
• headache, 
• dizziness, 
• drowsiness,
• pounding heartbeats or fluttering in the chest,
• confusion, 
• nervousness, and
• rash or itching

Serious side effects of Flavoxate include:

• hyperpyrexia,
• vertigo, and
• signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Rare side effects of Flavoxate include:

• none

• Flavoxate has severe interactions with no other drugs.
• Flavoxate has serious interactions with the following drugs:
  • pramlintide
  • secretin
• Flavoxate has moderate interactions with at least 88 other drugs.
• Flavoxate has minor interactions with the following drugs:
  • atenolol
  • desipramine
  • digoxin
  • dimenhydrinate
  • donepezil
  • galantamine
  • levodopa
  • trazodone

• Obstructive uropathy, pyloric/duodenal obstruction, ileus, GI bleeding, achalasia

Cautions

• Use with caution in patients with glaucoma
• May impair ability to perform hazardous tasks
• May cause ocular disturbances; advise patients of potential effects
• Vertigo may occur

Pregnancy and Lactation

• May be acceptable during pregnancy.

• Not known if excreted in breast milk, use caution
