What Is Naphcon A?

Naphcon A (naphazoline hydrochloride and pheniramine maleate) is a combination of a decongestant/redness reliever and an antihistamine used for the temporary relief of redness and itching of the eye(s) due to ragweed pollen, grass, and animal dander and hair. Naphcon A is available over-the-counter (OTC).

What Are Side Effects of Naphcon A?

Naphcon A may cause serious side effects including:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • ongoing or worsening eye redness,
  • eye pain, and
  • changes in your vision

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

Common side effects of Naphcon A include:

  • eye stinging or redness,
  • dilated pupils, or
  • blurred vision

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for Naphcon A

The dose of Naphcon A for adults and children 6 years and over is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Naphcon A?

Naphcon A may interact with MAO inhibitors, drugs for high blood pressure, and tricyclic antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Naphcon A During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Naphcon A; it is unknown if it would affect a fetus. It is unknown if Naphcon A passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

  • overuse may cause more eye redness
  • remove contact lenses before using to avoid contamination, do not touch tip of container to any surface
  • replace cap after each use

Stop use and ask a doctor if

  • you feel eye pain
  • changes in vision occur
  • redness or irritation of the eye(s) gets worse or lasts more than 72 hours

Keep out of the reach of children.

If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. Accidental swallowing by infants and children may lead to coma and marked reduction in body temperature.
