What Is Benzedrex?

Benzedrex (propylhexedrine inhalant) is an over-the-counter (OTC) nasal decongestant used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion due to a cold, hay fever, or other upper respiratory allergies (allergic rhinitis).

What Are Side Effects of Benzedrex?

Side effects of Benzedrex include:

  • temporary nasal discomfort such as burning, stinging, sneezing, or increased nasal discharge,
  • agitation,
  • chest pain,
  • tremors,
  • confusion,
  • nausea, and
  • vomiting.

Abuse and misuse of Benzedrex can lead to serious harm such as heart and mental health problems. Some of these complications, which include fast or abnormal heart rhythm, high blood pressure (hypertension), and paranoia, can lead to hospitalization, disability, or death.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision,tunnel vision,eye painor swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
  • Severe headache,confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for Benzedrex

The dose of Benzedrex for adults and children 6 to 12 years of age (with adult supervision) is two inhalations in each nostril not more than every two hours.

Do not exceed recommended dosage. Do not use for more than three days.
